Blackjack is extremely popular. On its face, it appears simple. Count up the total of the cards in your hand and get an amount as close to 21 as you can with the fewest cards. Aces have a value of 1 or 11, and face cards are worth 10. Numbered cards are worth the numbers on them, and suits don’t count at all. Simple, yes? Not really. There is quite a bit more to the game, especially at first when you are just learning how to play blackjack.

This game of cards has a kind of basic strategy. Every round will have a limited number of possible hands, so your next move will depend on the cards you are initially dealt. Always draw another card, or hit, when your cards add up to eight or less. Don’t take new cards, or stand pat, when you have seventeen or more.

It’s a tougher call when your hand adds up to between nine and sixteen, since these hands are not usually high enough to beat the hand held by the dealer, so you cannot simply stand pat. You also stand a good chance of busting, or getting cards that kick your total up over twenty-one. Hands like these, also known as stiff hands, can make a card player nervous.

One bonus of online card rooms is that you do not have to leave your home for a game, and this means that you can be a comfortable card shark. Web-based casinos also usually give the house a lower edge, too. Sometimes casinos will employ up to six decks of cards each round, and this will give them the higher edge. Seek out houses that use only one or two decks each round and you will have a better chance of coming out a winner.

Some players count cards. This means they are keeping track of the cards being dealt. High cards like aces and tens are good for the player. Low cards are good for the dealer. Each card is positive or negative according to its value; low is +1, high is -1.

Nines, eights and sevens have zero value. As the cards are dealt, players keep running totals in their heads. This is called the running count. However, the total number of decks being used can have an effect on the count, so what you really need is the true count. To get this true count, divide a running count by how many decks are in use. If your true count results in +2 or higher, then bet. It is that simple.

It’s easy to learn how to play blackjack online. By logging on to an Internet casino, you can play against people from all over the world. And if you learn to be really good at the game, you can take their money.
